Dear Friends and Colleagues of the GHG Protocol,
With the summer well underway, the GHG Protocol is busy with many projects and workshops taking place. Tsinghua University and WRI hosted the first stakeholder workshop in China this month for the new Product and Supply Chain Standard. The WRI and WBCSD are now in the process of convening a global stakeholder process to develop these standards. The Brazil and India GHG Protocol Programs were both successfully launched in May, joining Mexico and the Philippines in developing national GHG emissions programs. We have updated many of our calculation tools with the most recent emission factors and calculation methodologies, but the widely used mobile combustion tool is still in critical need of funding. The Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department worked with WRI’s GHG Protocol team to adapt The Greenhouse Gas Protocol: A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (2004) for its building sector. WRI and WBCSD Convening Global Stakeholder Process to Develop New Product/Supply Chain Guidelines
Over the last few months, the GHG Protocol has been planning new guidelines for product life-cycle emissions and corporate-level scope 3 emissions. The World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development are in the process of convening a global stakeholder process to develop these standards.

Business, government, and NGOs partner to launch Brazil GHG Protocol Program
In her final act as Minister of Environment, then-Minister Marina Silva launched the Brazil Greenhouse Gas Protocol Program on May 12 in Brasilia. The program will serve as a national public registry for corporate GHG inventories, calculation methodologies, and emission factors.

Indian industry initiates GHG Inventorization Program with WRI and U.S.
Close on the heels of a new GHG program in Brazil, the Indian industry launched a national-level GHG Inventorization Program in Delhi, India, on May 28, 2008. Under the program, corporations will measure and manage their GHG emissions based on internationally recognized standards and monitor their progress towards voluntary reduction goals. The India GHG Inventory Program is a partnership between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the US EPA, and the World Resources Institute.

Hong Kong adopts GHG Protocol for Building Sector
Accounting for 89 percent of end-use electricity consumption, buildings are the focus of a new ‘Carbon Audit’ campaign aimed to tackle climate change in Hong Kong. On July 24, Hong Kong’s ‘Guidelines to Account for and Report on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals for buildings (Commercial, Residential or Institutional Purpose) in Hong Kong’ based on the WRI-WBCSD GHG Protocol was launched in a ceremony attended by 37 major organizations, including all of Hong Kong’s major property developers, as well as media.

The Climate Registry Releases General Reporting Protocol and Online Reporting Tool
The Climate Registry has finalized its General Reporting Protocol, which provides a consistent framework for companies and organizations across North America to measure and publicly report their Greenhouse Gas emissions. To date, the Climate Registry has the participation of over 250 reporting organizations, including WRI.

Second generation of GHG Protocol tools released; WRI and WBCSD seeking sponsors for mobile combustion tool
The GHG Protocol has updated many of its calculation tools with the most recent emission factors and calculation methodologies, according to the latest technical guidance provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), International Energy Agency (IEA), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Andrea Brown - WBCSD
Andrea BrownAndrea Brown joined the Energy and Climate Team of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in June 2008, where she works on the GHG Protocol and Adaptation work streams. Prior to joining the WBCSD, she managed intergovernmental relations and trade policy issues for the Department of Energy in the Government of Alberta, Canada. She holds a Masters of Asia Pacific Policy Studies focused on security issues, from the University of British Columbia, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Alberta. She has previous experience working for the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), as well as in international NGOs in Thailand and Vietnam.
Anthony D’Agostino
Anthony is currently working with WRI’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol to support the development of new GHG accounting standards at the product and supply chain levels. In May, he completed a Master in Public Policy (MPP) degree from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (National University of Singapore) with a specialization in Social and Environmental Policy. His thesis topic dealt with integrating life cycle assessment (LCA) at a streamlined level for use by SMEs and has done research work in STELLA modeling, demand-side management, and environmental economics.
Anthony spent last summer working with UNEP’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, focusing on a sustainable buildings partnership with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Prior to his graduate studies, he was a mental health social worker for 1.5 years with Easter Seals New Jersey before traveling through India, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, and South America working for rural development organizations and volunteering on organic farms. He holds an undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in philosophy and physics.
Laura Pocknell
Laura Pocknell joins the WRI GHG Protocol team as Communications Coordinator. In this position, Laura will be facilitating the development of the GHG Protocol’s communication strategy, including editing the website and quarterly newsletter as well as coordinating media outreach. She will also serve as project coordinator for the GHG Protocol, managing the project budget, reports and facilitating day-to-day operation. Prior to coming to WRI, Laura was a Marketing Coordinator for Avis Rent-a-Car in London. She holds a B.S. in International Management and American Business Studies from the University of Manchester and spent a year at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
