Indian industry initiates GHG Inventorization Program with WRI and U.S.

Close on the heels of a new GHG program in Brazil, the Indian industry launched a national-level GHG Inventorization Program in Delhi, India, on May 28, 2008. Under the program, corporations will measure and manage their GHG emissions based on internationally recognized standards and monitor their progress towards voluntary reduction goals. The India GHG Inventory Program is a partnership between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the US EPA, and the World Resources Institute.

Outreach Activities

The Climate Registry WRI continues to play an active role in the design and implementation of the Climate Registry. WRI is working with registry staff to analyze the extensive public comments received on the Climate Registry’s General Reporting Protocol and develop policy recommendations and new technical guidance in response to those comments. Since its creation in 2002, the U.S. EPA Climate Leaders Program has assisted more than 150 companies to develop and implement long-term climate change strategies. This includes developing a GHG inventory, an inventory management plan, and a GHG reduction target.

The Climate Registry The Climate Registry, the new North American greenhouse gas emissions registry founded on the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, now has participation from 40 U.S. states, one Mexican state, and all of Canada’s provinces. Multi-state Registry [rlevinson@wri.org] WRI is providing technical support to the Multi-State Registry (MSR) Technical Working Group. It is comprised of representatives from the California Climate Action Registry, the Eastern Climate Registry Working Group, the Midwest Registry Working Group, and Western states working through the Western Regional Air Partnership. On Oct. 12-13, the MSR Technical Working Group convened at WRI’s offices in Washington, D.C. to discuss various issues regarding the framework proposal, which include voluntary reporting, mandatory reporting, and verification proposals. The China Business Council for Sustainable Development, in conjunction with WBCSD and WRI, hosted an informational workshop, “Corporate Energy Conservation and GHG Management,” on June 1 in Beijing at the Kempinski Hotel.
