China On May 12, WRI hosted representatives from the Cement Task Force of the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development to plan for the next workshop to train Chinese cement companies to account for CO2 emissions using the GHG Protocol. At this meeting in Washington, D.C., the China Building Materials Academy (CBMA) and the National Development Reform Commission (NDRC) presented results from a survey of 12 of China’s largest cement companies who are beginning to implement the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) CO2 Protocol based on the GHG Protocol. The Climate Registry WRI continues to play an active role in the design and implementation of the Climate Registry. WRI is working with registry staff to analyze the extensive public comments received on the Climate Registry’s General Reporting Protocol and develop policy recommendations and new technical guidance in response to those comments. Through this effort, WRI is further developing and refining best practices in corporate GHG accounting and reporting and in GHG registry implementation.. The Climate Registry The Climate Registry, the new North American greenhouse gas emissions registry founded on the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, now has participation from 40 U.S. states, one Mexican state, and all of Canada’s provinces. WRI’s GHG Protocol team has continued to provide technical support in the development of the Climate Registry’s protocols to ensure compatibility with the GHG Protocol standards; to promote the use of best practices in GHG measurement, accounting, and reporting; and to achieve consistency in GHG accounting across North America. Multi-state Registry [rlevinson@wri.org] WRI is providing technical support to the Multi-State Registry (MSR) Technical Working Group. It is comprised of representatives from the California Climate Action Registry, the Eastern Climate Registry Working Group, the Midwest Registry Working Group, and Western states working through the Western Regional Air Partnership. On Oct. 12-13, the MSR Technical Working Group convened at WRI’s offices in Washington, D.C. to discuss various issues regarding the framework proposal, which include voluntary reporting, mandatory reporting, and verification proposals. Brazil GHG Program [tfransen@wri.org] WRI and WBCSD are working with the Conselho Empresarial Brasileiro para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (CEBDS) and Fundação Getulio Vargas to initiate a greenhouse gas accounting and reporting program in Brazil. Preparations for an industry workshop to be held this spring in Brazil are underway. China Initiative [pankaj@wri.org] WRI and WBCSD reached an agreement with the China Business Council for Sustainable Development (CBCSD) in Beijing to initiate a voluntary corporate energy and greenhouse gas management program in China. WRI-Facilitated U.S. Registry Launched
For some time now, U.S. states have been well ahead of the federal government in taking action on climate change. In April came the latest big development: 34 U.S. states, two Canadian provinces (British Columbia and Manitoba), and the Campo Kumeyaay Nation joined together to form the Climate Registry.Read More
Mexico GHG Program becomes permanent
The Mexico GHG Program officially transitioned from a pilot project to a permanent program on October 2, marking a significant milestone for the program partners and 30 participating businesses. The transition was ushered in through a signing of a permanent-status Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which replaced the pilot-phase MOU that was set to expire in November.Read More
