Update on GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals Guidance

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is developing corporate-level Land Sector and Removals Guidance, building on the Corporate Standard and Scope 3 Standard. This Guidance will fill a key gap in creating more consistency and transparency in the way companies quantify and report GHG emissions and removals from land use, land use change, biogenic products and carbon dioxide removal technologies. The Guidance is being developed through a global, inclusive, multi-stakeholder development process started in 2020.

The draft Guidance will be available for pilot testing by the Pilot Testing Group and review by the Review Group beginning in September. The Review Group is open to any interested stakeholder that wants to participate in the public consultation by reviewing the draft (to sign up, click here). The pilot testing phase will last 4 months and the review phase will last 2 months.

Members of the Pilot Testing Group and Review Group will receive the draft by email when it is available. The draft Guidance will also be available here in September.

Following the pilot testing and review phase, the Guidance will be finalized in consultation with the Advisory Committee and Technical Working Group and published in 2023.

The Guidance will play a critical part in informing corporate land sector and removal mitigation strategies and will serve as the basis for the Science-Based Target Initiative and other initiatives.
